ZNF insider “Methodic Jon” caught Engadget’s coverage of potential GPS interruption and suggested we run a public service announcement. And so we are. From the FAA advisory to pilots:
The Department of Defense will conduct GPS tests on January 20th through February22nd, 2011. During testing, the GPS signal may be unreliable or unavailable.
As you can see from the image above, the potential footprint of GPS service disruption looks quite large. So I rang up the US Coast Guard Navigation Center to better understand how this testing might impact us here on the ground. If I understand correctly, which is not a given, testing could very well effect our GPS equipment. However, at altitudes in this region, the radius of impact is a much more modest 150 miles.
Testing during the month will not be continual or concurrent, but folks in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina may want to take their GPS guidance with a grain of salt… and possibly resort to some old school MapQuest printouts when visiting unfamiliar locales.
Boca, gaining a rep for exotic tacos, plans lion-meat offering
In the six months since it launched Exotic Taco Wednesdays, Boca
Tacos y Tequila has served up python, alligator, elk, kangaroo and
rattlesnake.Frog legs, turtle, duck and Rocky Mountain oysters have also
made appearances.“We’ve done just about anything we can get our hands on,” said
owner Bryan Mazon. “Every Wednesday we do something a little bit
different.”Last week he announced on Boca’s Facebook page that the UA-area
taco shop was accepting prepaid orders for African lion, to be
served on Feb. 16. Orders must be placed by 3 p.m. Feb. 7.“I’ve gotten a lot of questions, like if it’s legal,” said
Mazon, adding that a few lion tacos have been reserved so far.
“We’re still a month out, too.”According to the Food and Drug Administration, lion and other
game meat can be sold as long as the species isn’t endangered.“I’m doing the African lion to get my name out,” said Mazon, who
used to be a salesman for City Meat and Provisions. “I’ve never
tried it myself, but this one really caught my eye.”Mazon said he had heard about a Mesa restaurant, il Vinaio, that
served burgers made with African lion to correspond with the World
Cup in South Africa last summer. Reservations sold out, but others
picketed the restaurant. Most of Boca’s exotic tacos range between $3 and $4. The lion
tacos cost $8.75 apiece. This is the first time Boca is pre-selling its tacos. But at
$100 a pound of ground lion meat – $400 for a pound of tenderloin –
it makes sense.Mazon said he still expects to lose money on the lion, but is in
it for exposure.“In all reality, what I want is just people to know that I’m
here,” he said. “That’s the way to do it. You can’t get these tacos
anywhere else.”His wife, Maria Jose Mazon, is Boca’s chef and will make eight
tacos per pound. The couple usually order 2 to 3 pounds of meat for Exotic
Wednesdays, with grilled alligator being the best-seller.But rattlesnake made an impact, too.
“It’s the one people want back the most,” Mazon said. “It was
the first one, and it’s the one most talked about.”The couple plan to order the lion meat from a farm in Perris,
Calif., which is southwest of Los Angeles. For the lion, diners will build their own Sonoran street-style
taco. They can add cabbage, guacamole, pickled red onions and diced
cucumbers and any of the six house-made salsas to the tacos. The Mazons opened their taco shop at 828 E. Speedway, in the
former home of Greasy Tony’s, the legendary sub shop, last
June.“I’m 50 percent local Tucsonans and 50 percent students,” Mazon
said. “We do gourmet tacos. Do I want to get more students? –
sure.“A lot of students might think that my price point isn’t
directed at them, but the average check is $8. Late night is 100
percent students.”Boca is open 11:30 a.m. to midnight Monday through Wednesday,
11:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and noon until 10
p.m. on Sunday. Call 777-8134 for more information.
Starbucks Starts Accepting Mobile Payments Nationwide
Nearly 6,800 company-operated Starbucks stores in the U.S. will begin accepting mobile payments Wednesday. Customers using the Starbucks Card Mobile app on their iPhone, iPod touch or BlackBerry will now be able to use those devices as tender.
The nationwide rollout marks the official launch of the Starbucks Card Mobile payment program, which has been piloted at Target stores and select San Francisco, Seattle and New York Starbucks locations.
Starbucks Card Mobile [iTunes link] lets users add their Starbucks Cards, track rewards and reload cards as needed via PayPal or credit card. To pay with their phone, app users simply select “touch to pay” and hold up the barcode on their mobile device screen to the 2-D scanner at the register.
An Android application is also said to be in the works, but the company has yet to disclose a release date.

Starbucks is using its own custom-built technology to enable the 2-D mobile barcode scans. The coffee retailer opted for barcode scanning over near field communication technology — which Google (
is exploring — because of its limited availability. The coffee retailer was reluctant to wait for a NFC ecosystem to develop when its customers have expressed interest in mobile payments now, according to Chuck Davidson, the category manager of innovation on the Starbucks Card team. “Once there are more users, we will adapt,” he says.
In testing, Starbucks assessed the mobile payment option by measuring application speed, transaction speed and total customer wait time, says Brady Brewer, vice president of Starbucks Card and brand loyalty. In all instances, Starbucks Card Mobile was the fastest way for customers to pay.
Starbucks is investing in mobile payments, an investment Davidson describes as modest in relation to expectations, because customers have requested the option and have shown a propensity to not only pay with Starbucks Cards — one in five transactions are made using a Starbucks Card — but frequently use their smartphones while waiting in line.
The company also believes that its customers carry their mobile phones more often than a wallet or purse, and sees Starbucks Card Mobile and the mobile payment program as an opportunity to reach these consumers and build stronger relationships.
Starbucks seems confident that its customers will appreciate the new, faster way to pay. Both Davidson and Brewer believe that adoption will spread as customers tell their friends about the new mobile payment option.

Apple Obtains Patent For Solar-Powered Devices
Are we going to be seeing solar-charged iPhone and iPads in the near future? This could become a reality if Apple executes on a recently awarded patent that describes solutions for charging a variety of devices (including laptops, tablet devices or mobile phones) via solar power.
From the general description of the actual patent: Portable devices having multiple power interfaces are described herein. According to one embodiment of the invention, a portable electronic device includes, but is not limited to, a processor, a memory coupled to the processor for storing instructions, when executed from the memory, cause the processor to perform one or more functions, a battery coupled to provide power to the processor and the memory, and a battery charging manager coupled to charge the battery using power derived from a plurality of power sources including a solar power source. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.
According to Patently Apple, Apple originally filed for the patent in Q1 2009. But there have been many rumors over the past few years that Apple is readying a solar powered device.
